It all began with a feature film in 1994 simply called "Stargate" Directed by Roland Emmerich( ID4 ),and starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.
The film begins with the discovery of the Stargate artifact in Giza in 1928. In a present day military base discredited Egyptologist Daniel Jackson (James Spader) enables use of the Stargate when he recognizes that symbols on the cover stones of the Stargate are star constellations used in a three dimensional coordinate system. Colonel Jack O'Neil (Kurt Russell)forms an away team to travel through the Stargate and identify any possible threats from the other side. Jackson accompanies them to "dial home" from the other side using his cryptography to decode it. The team discovers an egyptian civilization mining ore for an alien posing as the Egyptian god Ra. Ra and his minions have taken human form, ruling the slaves with swift discipline. With the help of the locals, the team is eventually able to instigate a rebellion, overwhelming Ra's forces. Ra tries to escape in his mothership, but O'Neil and Jackson are able to teleport a nuclear warhead on-board Ra's ship in orbit and destroy it. With Ra dead, the civilization can live in peace; O'Neil and his team return home through the Stargate, but Jackson decides to remain.
The film spawned 3 live action television series to continue the story and concept;Stargate: SG-1;Stargate: Atlantis;and Stargate: Universe.
One animated television series Stargate: Infinity was also produced.
Two direct to DVD films were also produced. Stargate;the Ark of Truth; and Stargate; Continuum. Both sequels to SG-1

I personally am a huge fan of the original film and I tried to watch the series, but I just couldn't "get into it" the film had a beginning and an end. There was no need to keep going in my opinion. Although the longevity and popularity of the extended universe seems to disagree with that.
